I'll start first by
explaining that the car in the foreground is a 1907 Peugeot.
It's from my collection of "Models
of Yesteryear" Matchbox cars. The background photograph
is a morning view of Main Street in Berlin New Hampshire taken
in 1911 by a photographer by the name of Guy Shorey. This image
can be found in a publication called, "Among
the White Hills, the life and times of Guy L. Shorey"
which was published in 1998. Guy Shorey was a well known New
Hampshire photographer who's career span over 60 years until
his death in 1961. His photographs are famous in this state
and can be found in museums, libraries, antique stores, private
collections and are frequently displayed on the "Mount
Washington Observatory" web site. I own several of
his "real photo" postcards and the aforementioned
publication of his work.
It's fantastic to come
across the work of Shorey, especially in the collections of
photography that really make New Hampshire a joy to look at,
especially for those who have lived here for many a year. Shorey
worked tirelessly to produce high-quality photography and his
works stands even now, whether you're noticing it as a postcard
in a store window or you've spotted it as someone's avatar
on the partypoker
website, Shorey was definitely someone
who left a lasting impression on the wealth of artistic representations
of his chosen subjects.
The image above is my
creation combining the two elements with the aid of Photoshop.
I won't tell you how it was done exactly but anybody who works
in Photoshop can probably figure it out... or maybe not. It
wasn't silhouetted if that is what you're thinking.
